"Orbit Downloader has stopped working" on start

I've had Orbit Downloader running fine on my Win7 system for a year or so now, sveral updates in that time. Now suddenly I'm getting "Orbit Downloader has stopped working" popping up when I start the app. Not just once but twice each time the app is started. The same occurs when I fire up Grab++ AND also GOM media player.

The problem started shortly after:

A) I had been tinkering with an evaluation installation of Visual Studio 2008 (C++). I had first installed it a couple of weeks before with on effect on Orbit, but had that day been moving the storage folders around. It may just be coincidence. I disabled the JustInTime debugger and the debug option disappeared from the error messages, but they still appeared, two of them for each start of Orbit or Grab++.

B) a couple of windows updates had failed to install that day:

ATI Technologies Inc. - Display - ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series
Installation date: ?08/?03/?2011 11:12
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80072EFE
Update type: Optional
ATI Technologies Inc. Display software update released in January, 2011

Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932)
Installation date: ?08/?03/?2011 11:12
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80072EFE
Update type: Important

both subsequently installed successfully on the second attempt.

Here are the problem sigs for both of the error boxes in sequence on trying to start Orbit:

I have reinstalled - as admin - both programs to no avail. Starting Windows in Safe Mode, both programs still crash but with only the first error displaying. Earlier versions of Orbit Downloader back to v. 3.0 are similarly affected. Running either as admin does not resolve the problem.

I allowed a subsequent Win7 SP1 update (500+MB) to go ahead in case it resolved things but it did not and I'm not keen to system resore all that work. All other programs I have tried seem unaffected. The post-installation setup wizard of GOM player ran okay, but the reinstalled program itself crashed as above. I have deleted the App. Data preferences folder as per the instruction on this site before reinstalling the latest Orbit - no help.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

May be the problem is with the OS. May be due to some reason, the OS is not working properly.

Maybe, as I said things went wrong after an update. Wondering if anyone has had similar problems.

Thanks Safar, it all started with the most up-to-date version available. I tried earlier versions just in case but no joy with either latest or older versions.

Re: "Orbit Downloader has stopped working" on start

The above spam did serve to remind me that I hadn't reported back on finding the underlying problem that was disabling Orbit.

It was Samsung Kies - notoriously (I now know) bad software for handling Samsung phones and very difficult to remove, though Samsung now provide an uninstaller which you can find through Google. Once Kies was gone I could still access my Tablet via USB and Orbit Downloader was restored to use.

Kies also wrecked GOM Player and MS Visual Studio for me, so avoid Samsung Kies.

K.
